North America 2024

Day 2: Tuesday 27 August 2024

Casper, Wyoming – Pedros, South of Casper

Pronghorns are a common site and a hazard along the roads in this high plateau grassland.

Erratic, crumbly rock formations provide spectacular artistic backdrops in every direction.

Prairie dogs are cute, but live a perilous life in this wide open terrain, overseen by birds of prey and even wolves. They also benefit the habitat by creating heterogeneity and biodiversity.

Recent fires have left their mark on vegetation and wildlife. The land will recover, and even needs fires, but it is always sad to see.

This is a stunning landscape in the San Pedro Mountains, sparsely populated by any species, but divided between privately owned and federal land. It was in this area that the famous San Pedro Mountains mummy was found, as well as many dinosaur fossils, including Pterosaur clawprints.

This could be a ´Preppers´ site. Preppers are people who build hideaways, stock armouries, and prepare for the end of the world. Wyoming is reputed to be a favourite for these escapists who choose not to face the consequences of the failing hegemonic politics of their country.

The sedimentary sandstone shows a strata of white volcanic ash, clearly illustrating the history of the region, which for much of its existence was under the sea, producing many marine dinosaur fossils, before being uplifted.
