Day 19: Thursday 24 July 2025

Kandy – Nuwara Eliya

Roadside housing, Kandy.

A roadside fruit seller, who provided us with a delicious snack for the journey. All the way, people were selling produce, often in the pouring rain and cold, putting our western demands for comfort and warmth to shame.

We stopped for a tour of a small tea plantation, where we had a comprehensive tasting experience. The promises of a miracle cure for all known ailments in white tea (top left) convinced us to buy some. This tea is made from the buds of black tea, and not the leaves, making it relatively expensive.

A typical stall alongside the road.

A tea plantation in the highlands. Here we are at about 1800m altitude.

Tea plantations were everywhere, surrounded by lush, thick vegetation.

A tea picker braves the steep slope and inclement weather.

A view over a valley, famed for its many waterfalls and lakes.

Travel Diary
Today was a 4.5 hour tuk-tuk ride over the 70 km from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. This was truly an adventure! Not only was the traffic quite intense for a mountain pass, the road was winding, and it rained for the last hour, with quite impenetrable fog at times.
