South Italy 2026

Day 26: Friday 16 October 2026

Taormina

Today we visited the Greek-Roman Theatre in Taormina. Besides being a fascinating step back in time, it has sensational views of the town, the coast in both directions, and of Mt. Etna.

The Roman wall, which, when recently discovered, was falsely named Le Naumachie, which is Greek for Sea Battle. Of course, it has nothing to do with mock sea battles….

A beautifully decorated house in an artistic corner of Taormina.

The artistic theme of Saracen wars extends beyond marionette theatre….

The Teatro Greco has an interesting archeological architecture display. Here are column capitals: two corinthian and the middle one is ionian.
